day 1 of sightseeing in Rome

Day 1 of sightseeing in Rome - 6 June

one of the first few things that got both of us pretty excited was this old old lift in our block... 2 layers of door, a wooden one and a metal one.... and both had to be closed before the lift can move... very jerky (in fact abit scary) and very very tiny.... capacity is only 300kg for 4 pax... but we were already having difficulty squeezing into the lift with 2 back packs and the lady who showed us to our room.... and it dosen help that the wooden door opens inwards into the lift.... it's like some time capsule that will transport us to many many decades back... not for people with claustrophobic... even a jittery for me when the lights went out when we were in the lift....all just because we took too long (5 seconds???) to figure out if button "1" or button "T" refers to the ground floor... =s

the width of the lift

worse case scenario would be when you are waiting for the lift on the first floor to go up to the fifth floor where our room is, only to find out that some idiotic and inconsiderate people on the 5th floor didnt bother to close the lift doors properly.... then what to do leh??? climb the stairs all the way to the 5th floor lo....it had already happened to us once, somemore at the end of the day where both of us were so super tired from all the walking.... =S

Breakfast place.... just below our room

Mr Ang have the habit of walking into the first restaurant that is available without checking out the prices.... then being a catty me, i will feel damn stress and heartache on the money tat we are going to spend on food la....

The 2 breakfast sets cost us 22.50 euro... which is like S$40 la...

Set 1 @ 9.5 euro - a cup of cuppucino, a toast, a croissant, a cup of orange juice and a cup of sparkling water....

dun understand why is there a need to provide like 3 different drinks for one breakfast set lo...

Set 2 @ 13 euro - a cup of cuppucino, a basket to bread with jams and butter, a cup of orange juice and an omelette

but it made Mr Ang a very happy man... =)... a good breakfast to him is always a good start to the day... so from here, i realised we are two very different kinds of travellers... he is the kind who thinks that since we had already spent so much to come here and had already exchange the currency then might as well just use all of them and have a good time...me, on the other end, would be very happy if i spend as little as possible and still have currency to exchange back to sing dollar when i am back de lo.... hahaha... so after much discussion, we decide to have at least one cheap roadside meal and one good meal a day so that both of us will feel happy... hahahaha....

buying tickets for the metro (something like our MRT)... train frequency is approx 1-2 minutes, 1 euro per ticket irregardless of distance... user friendly machine in english... =)... but the crowd of people at the train station is much much much worse than even jurong east at 9 to 10am...guess is their peak hour... i got squashed right left front back and could only be pushed into the 4th train that arrived at the platform.... and the stupid thing is that the trains do not stop at the same exact spot everytime...so the position of the doors will differ by approx 1 to 1.5m each time... argh....

anyway, our first stop is Spagna metro station... was surprised to be greeted by rows of horse carriages when we came out of the metro station...

the bag which made the horse looked as if it has a beard actually contained food for the horse

Just next to Spagna metro station is Trinita dei Monti, a church located above many many steps....

cobble stones..... most of the roads are lined with these....so glad that i chose to be in sport shoes... =)....

walk walk walk and next up is the Fontana di Trevi

The 2 sea horses are one wild, one docile, to represent the moods of the sea.

The famous custom is to throw a coin into the fountain, thus ensuring our return to the Eternal City. According to the same tradition if we throw in a second coin we’ll fall in love with an Italian, while a third will have us marrying him or her. So we threw in only one coin each.... i guess it means we are rather happy with each other...hahaha... =P

Handsome Italian construction workers in their bright orange construction suit..... they look so good that i kept thinking that they might just break into some kind of song and dance lo... like in mtv.... hahahaha....

walk walk walk somemore and we reached Pantheon, another church

Info from Lonely Planet:

"The dome was the largest in the world until the 15th century and is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. Its harmonious appearance is due to a precisely callibrated symmetry – the diameter is exactly equal to the Pantheon’s interior height of 43.3m. Light enters through the oculus, an 8.7m opening in the dome that also served as a symbolic connection between the temple and the gods."

22 tiny holes (like the 4 below) in the slightly sloping marble floor help to drain away the rainwater which also enters the church through the oculus.... it will be such a sight if it rains during service ah... the rain will just crash in right in the middle of the church... dosen the rain splitter splatter and damage the funiture??? hmm.... wierd but very interesting...

One of the few things that caught my attention in the church...

inspiration for craft work for school...oopx....

a hot busker just outside the church...Mr Ang commented that he sounded really good....

a cute gladiator posing for his mum just outside the church... =)

walk walk walk once more.... and we reached Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II...

initially when we saw this, i thought it must be the body of some king or warlord... but after googling, it's actually the tomb of an unknown soldier.... check out the meaning behind it...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_of_the_Unknown_Soldier

and pity these two guardmen above too.... although the sun was not shinning at them during this timing, i bet it will definitely shine at them at other timing de lo...

i so love love love this place...it's a must must must visit.... cos there's toilet in here... hahaha.... toilet is really really scare in rome... we paid 1 euro for the use though....

on the way to Colosseo by foot.... it's really walking and walking and more walking... though the sun was shinning hot, the cold aircon wind was super comfy.. =)

interesting camou...they actually bother to create a drawing of the building to block off the part of the building that is being reconstructed...

life statues ....see the container for money??? so much more professional than the ones we have at orchard road....

nearing the Colosseo

bigger cobble stones around the Colosseo...so glad that i m in sport shoes... =)

din bother to go in as we were both very tired from all the walking

we had our lunch while sitting on the floor outside the Colosseo

- a hotdog bread with a bottle of coke - 7 euro... =S

... on the walk walk home ...

an interesting sign.... the black man that is carrying the no entry sign is actually a sticker that had been added on... wonder if it's an act of vandalism...

got lost once more.... hahahaha.... so decided to take a break at one of the gelato shop... ORNETTI....love the orangy deco and the colourful prints and starry starry lights .... helpful counter girl gave us direction back to room sweet room... =)

Mr Ang and his Caffè Espresso gelato

Me with my mango sorbet gelato

2 euro per cone.... really the best-buy thing in rome where everything else is so overpriced....

more buildings along the road back to room sweet room....

finally room sweet room, after 6 hours of walking.....really surprised to see the room cleaned up with new towels... they even packed the dirty socks we threw on the floor neatly into a corner... =).... good services.... forgot to mention, there is free wifi in the room too... =)

took a 1.5 hours nap and went out to get dinner and more drinking water....

spagetti and lasagna for dinner at some roadside store.... 4.50 euro each.... just with tomato sauce and some cheese.... no meat at all, not even minced meat bits lo... taste so so only.... can tell that Mr Ang is not satisfied.... hahahaha.... nevermind, reward him with a better lunch tmr...provided we have a cheap breakfast and dinner.... =P

dinner is complete with another gelato.... chocolate for him and banana with chocolate layers for me..... regret..... cos the huge chocolate chunks in the super yummilious gelato is kick starting my sorethroat..... =S
